Holy shit. How much torque does that thing make?

Just read the Amazon reviews.

Aaaaaand add to cart..

I need to get a tool box first but this is definitely happening soon. Working on the Nissan has resulted in much use of a five foot breaker bar (aka the handle from my 3 ton jack).

Amusingly, my Kobalt ratchet has started to slip occasionally and my Harbor Freight low-profile ratchet is handling anything I throw at it.

Dude, electric impact guns changed my life. I bought a ryobi 18v and two batteries for $90 at home depot. No more stuck bolts on our shitty Rusty Racer 300zx

This got some wheels turning about unorthodox applications...

That’s 53hp at 400rpm, 159hp at 1200rpm, 253hp at 1900rpm.

Of course this is all based on max torque, but even still... even if torque fell off by 80% by 400rpm and 90% by 1900rpm, that’s still ~10/24/25.

In other words, enough for a crazy awesome go-kart.

I’m probably doing some math wrong somewhere though...

This thing would be worth it just for tire changes. Although you could probably go with a much smaller model for that job.

But dude, you could just buy 230 Nissan’s for that price! Why bother fixing them, just throw them away when they break!

My workplace has similar but from Milwaukee. An utterly mad thing. We use it to tighten down mounting brackets for vehicles heavy duty chassis dynamometer.

It can also take off alternator pulley nuts without even the need to hold the pulley...

I’d be worried about heat accumulation since this is only designed to operate for short spurts.

Those max torque values definitely do not occur at the max rpm values. The rpm at max torque is very near zero.

For battery operated tools, the power calculation is Volts x Amps=P (in Watts). Then divide Watts by 746 to get horsepower. I don’t see any information on the tool or the battery about current draw. Even if the tool pulls 5 Amps (unlikely), that calculates to 0.134 hp.

Honestly, with the weight you’d save over making a comparatively underpowered gas kart, I’m sure you could rig up an adequate cooling system.

As far as just throwing it in though, you’re right. I saw an article once about someone who was powering their boat with a started motor from a WW2 bomber, one of the issues the had was getting a starter to run continuously and still be reliable.

Oh, I just noticed that the tool does NOT come with batteries at $230. If you already have Dewalt batteries, you’re good. Otherwise prepare to shell out another $50-150 for batteries and charger. Or go with the kit with bag, battery and charger for $350.

OK, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t hp consistent with relation to torque at a given rpm regardless of how that torque is produced?

If so that means that for every rpm increase the torque value is first divided by that rpm before calculating hp.

Seems kind of odd, but then I don’t know much about electrics...

That's impressive. I know Milwaukee has some big honking electric impacts, but they also cost a small fortune. My craftsman one (Same as the Rigid) will do about 300 ft-lbs, which has been enough for me. But I typically use it for lug nuts and driving in lag bolts.

My absolute favorite tool that I get the most use of is my Milwaukee 1/2 cordless impact (2663). I picked it over it’s larger brother (2763) because of it’s smaller size and weight. I like to bring it with me on autox/track days...

It advertises as ‘450 ftlbs’ of torque, and I’ve removed Miata front and rear axle bolts in seconds. These were never removed as far as I could tell, and it unbolted them in literally 2 seconds.

I don’t know how these hold up to service work at a dealership, but for personal use, you can’t beat them!

You are correct in that hp is just a relationship of torque and rpm. However, that assumes a constant torque at some rpm. With impact drivers the torque is applied over a very short time period. It’s like hitting a nail with a hammer. Very high forces are generated, but only for a fraction of a second.

To calculate the hp you would have to get the average torque over time and then do your calculation. If we were to graph the torque it would look something like this ^___________^___________^__________^____

Those peaks would be up over 700 ft-lbs, but the flat line is zero. The average ends up being very low.

I suggested looking at the battery power since that calculation is pretty easy.

So it’s closer to releasing a sudden burst of stored energy than it is to a normal motor.

What actually causes the peaks in the middle?
